About Colonel Marvin L. Griffin, P.E.

Colonel Marvin L. Griffin, P.E. assumed command of the Savannah District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, on June 19, 2015. As District Commander, Griffin oversees the Savannah District’s military and civil works programs valued at approximately $1 billion. The construction mission alone involves an extensive program at 11 Army and Air Force installations throughout Georgia and North Carolina. The civil works mission consists of wetland protection oversight for all of Georgia and management of three hydro-electric dams and reservoirs that provide more than half of the peaking hydropower supply in the Southeast region. He also oversees the water resource mission for the entire Savannah River Basin, which is a freshwater resource for eastern Georgia and western South Carolina down to the Savannah Harbor. As Commander, Griffin is responsible for the district’s work in military design and master planning. He also oversees the district's mission for hazardous, toxic, and radioactive waste clean-up at formerly used defense sites and manages real estate activities for the Department of Defense. Even further, his district team functions as a resource in emergency management operations in Georgia, as well as other federal agencies.

Griffin graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and was commissioned into the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1994. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from West Point, earned a Master of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and is a Licensed Professional Engineer in Missouri. His military education includes the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses; Combined Arms and Services Staff School; Command and General Staff College; Army Force Management School; and Senior Service College Fellowship with the Secretary of Defense Corporate Fellowship Program.

Griffin commanded the 62nd Engineer Battalion (Construction) at Fort Hood, Texas, and during its deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan, from July 2011 to June 2013. His troop assignments also include Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, and Assistant Operations Officer in the 326th Engineer Battalion, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky, from April 1995 to March 1998; Assistant Operations Officer and Commander of A Company, 40th Engineer Battalion, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany, from November 1998 to July 2001, commanding A Company during the deployment to Kosovo in support of Operation Joint Guardian; and Battalion S-3 and Executive Officer of the 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia, from July 2006 to March 2009, serving as the Executive Officer for the deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Griffin’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (with oak leaf cluster), the Meritorious Service Medal (with 5th oak leaf cluster), the Bronze de Fleury Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (with oak leaf cluster), the Army Achievement Medal (with 2nd oak leaf cluster), the Global War on Terrorism Support Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon (3rd award), the Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan Campaign Medals, the NATO Medals for Kosovo and Afghanistan, the Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge and Ranger Tab.
